The iPad mini 4 will be a lot like a smaller iPad Air 2

The iPad mini 4 will be a lot like a smaller iPad Air 2
The iPad mini 4 will be a lot like a smaller iPad Air 2

It's usually the iPhone that dominates Apple's earnings reports but let's not forget about the iPad: if new reports out of Asia are to be believed we might get three new fruit-flavoured slates before Christmas.
The leaked tips centre around the iPad mini 4, which sources say will be a shrunken iPad Air2, complete with an A8 processor and an 8MP iSight camera. The dimensions will be the same as the iPad mini 3 except for the thickness, dropping to 6.1mm from 7.5mm.
You may remember the rather underwhelming launch of the iPad mini 3, where Apple added Touch ID and very little else. This time around the upgrade looks much more substantial.

Three's a crowd

The report also mentions the iPad Pro, the super-sized iPad that Apple has been rumoured to be building for several years. Apparently it will come out alongside the iPad Air 3 and the iPad mini 4.
That rebuffs earlier speculation that the iPad Air refresh would be skipped this year to give suppliers more time to focus on the iPad Pro. If you're in the market for a new tablet then you'll have plenty to choose from.
New iPads are usually announced in October and this year should be no different. The arrival of Force Touch is another good bet, as it's spreading to more and more of Apple's products.

First Impressions: Lava Android One Smartphone

First Impressions: Lava Android One Smartphone

At any point in time, India-based Lava is bound to fetch better traction with its Google association and this is where Android One will surely able the brand to widen its horizon in the smartphone space. Google has its work cut out after the not-so-successful stint with Android One initiative last year.

Much is expected from the search giant which still deems the project, as important as it was back then. Lava will be hoping its Pixel V1 phone with promise of Android 5.1 Lollipop stock experience will be a major attractive point for buyers. However, for Rs 11,349 this device is almost twice the value of first generation Android One phones. Is it any better than before? We managed some time with the device and here's our first look.

Lumia 950 leaks show Microsoft could finally deliver an amazing phone

Loads of new specifications for the upcoming Lumia 950 and 950 XL have leaked, hinting that this pair will be some of the first flagship handsets to feature the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system.
According to the leaks, which apparently come from sources known to ItHome.com, the Microsoft Lumia 950 will come with a 5.2-inch 2K resolution screen, a six-core Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 3,000 mAh removable battery.
Meanwhile the Lumia 950 XL will apparently have a larger 5.7-inch screen with the same 2K resolution, along with an octa-core Snapdragon 810 CPU, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,300 mAh battery which is also removable.

Shared specs

The leaks also claim that the two handsets will come with 32GB storage along with microSD expansion, a 20MP main camera, a 5MP front camera and the brand new USB Type-C port.
Both handsets are also said to come with slimline full metal ubibodies – a departure from the bright plastic-metal bodies of recent high-end Lumia devices.
If these specs are accurate, then it looks like Microsoft is once again building flagship devices after concentrating on bringing us budget Lumias in the past.
The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are rumoured to appear in October or November this year – could these be the handsets to tempt people to move to Windows 10 Mobile? We've contacted Microsoft to try to prise out some more details.

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus now cheaper in India

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus now cheaper in India

Apple, it seems, has realized that the extravagant pricing of its flagship phones haven't exactly proved to be a success with the Indian public. Keeping that in mind, the company has slashed the pricing of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, both of which were available late last year in the country.

These discounts are only being seen through online retailers at the moment with the likes of Flipkart and Amazon offering the models at cheaper prices.

The 16GB iPhone 6 in Gold is being offered for Rs. 50,290 from Amazon, while Flipkart has it for Rs. 51,459. The 16GB iPhone 6 Plus on the other hand can be yours for Rs. 56,999 when bought via Amazon India. You can save Rs. 1,000 more through Flipkart as it has the same model for Rs. 55,999.

The 128GB iPhone 6 is being offered for Rs. 70,299 from Amazon India, while the 64GB model has no change in price and is stuck at Rs. 62,500. Flipkart has the 128GB iPhone 6 for Rs. 69,999, while the 64GB variant is being sold for Rs. 59,999.

So if you're looking to get a 64 or 128GB model of the iPhone 6, Flipkart is your best bet at the moment. Other models of the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus haven't seen major discounts, so they're not worth mentioning here.

We're yet to hear anything officially from Apple, but this new wave of price reduction will certainly make the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus slightly more lighter on your wallets, although still nowhere near being considered affordable.

The decrease in price might be Apple's way of countering the fresh announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S6, which is expected to hit the Indian markets by early April.

InFocus M810 launching July 15 via Amazon for Rs 14,999

InFocus M810 launching July 15 via Amazon for Rs 14,999
InFocus
M810 launching July 15 via Amazon for Rs 14,999

A couple of InFocus smartphones are exclusive to Indian retailer Snapdeal. But the company has now shown willingness to expand its horizon a little bit by bringing a new handset, the InFocus M810 to Amazon India. The handset is yet again an exclusive, but InFocus will look to cover a wider range of customers with this new launch. The device is made using "hand-crafted matte metal", which adds to the overall aesthetic appeal.

Unlike the recently launched budget priced InFocus M2, this one is a mid-tier handset and is priced at Rs 14,999, with sufficient hardware specifications to match the pricing. Customers can get the handset from July 15 onwards, with no registration required from what we can tell now.

Sachin Thapar, Country Head, InFocus India said, "The premium device aesthetics of the M810 delight and enchant like nothing else in the market. The phone is the result of a relentless pursuit of design and visual excellence. Each facet of this marvel is comparable only to products that belong to the highest echelons of luxury. The gleaming glass case immediately reminds you of the chrome finish that the most high-end cars sport and the matte metallic portion is an instant throwback to the dials of some of the most exclusive time-pieces in the world."

Hardware specifications of the InFocus M810:

· 5.5-inch Full HD display
· 6.99mm thickness
· Quad core Snapdragon 801 processor
· 13MP rear camera
· 5MP front camera
· 2GB RAM
· 16GB internal storage (expandable up to 64GB)
· Android 5.0 Lollipop

The handset is sold in a solitary gold color variant, so there aren't a lot of choices to pick from. Amazon hasn't specified as to when exactly the handset will go on sale this Wednesday, but we're guessing it will be a standard 2PM launch like we've seen in the past.

OnePlus Two: OnePlus One, plus one, equals Two

OnePlus Two: OnePlus One, plus one, equals Two

What we want to see?

The OnePlus One came out of nowhere as the first product of a new company, but it didn't disappoint, thanks to high end specs and a surprisingly low price tag.
One of the biggest complaints we could level at it was how hard it was to get hold of at launch and when that's the biggest problem a phone is facing you know you've got a winner on your hands.
But while there were no expectations for the OnePlus One hopes are sky high for the OnePlus 2, so it's got a lot to live up to.

News and rumors

We don't know a huge amount about the OnePlus Two yet, but it's supposedly set to land during the third quarter of 2015.
There are rumblings that it could have a premium metal build, while specs are rumored to include a 5.5-inch QHD screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 3300 mAh battery and older reports point to a 16MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing snapper.
While we know it will land with OxygenOS almost certainly paired with Android Lollipop and perhaps most intriguingly of all it's set to 'surprise people'.
Of course all the rumors that we've heard could turn out to be false and there's still plenty that we don't know, so here's what we want to see.

1. A more premium build

OnePlus One bamboo
The OnePlus One is a top tier handset, but it doesn't look like a top tier handset so we really hope the OnePlus Two will have a more premium build.
The obvious choice here is metal, which there are rumors we'll see this time around, but we'd be just as happy with something like bamboo. The OnePlus One briefly had bamboo back covers available, but manufacturing issues meant they were discontinued and this time we'd like to see them included as standard.

2. A similarly low price

One of the biggest selling points of the OnePlus One is its relatively low price tag, as it starts at just £229, $299. That price hasn't gone down since launch, so it's slightly less impressive now than it once was, but it's less than half the cost of most flagships.
If the specs and build are improved as is likely then there's a good chance that the OnePlus 2 will also be more expensive, but if it is then we hope not by much.

3. A microSD card slot

Cut corners are always likely to be necessary when delivering a phone as good value as the OnePlus One and one of them was the omission of a microSD card slot.
We can't be too hard on it when phones twice its price, like the Samsung Galaxy S6, also lack such a slot, but we'd love to see one included in the OnePlus Two so that storage is less limited.
Or at the very least an option for more internal memory. The 64GB available in some versions of the OnePlus One is pretty generous, but we're sure it could be increased to 128GB.

4. A removable battery

OnePlus One battery
Another slight disappointment with the OnePlus One was that the battery isn't removable. That's the case with a lot of phones and the OnePlus One does at least have quite good battery life.
But if you're a power user it's nice to know you can swap the battery out if needed and perhaps even more importantly it means you can replace the battery when yours wears out rather than having to buy a whole new phone.

5. Even better specs

With its 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM the One is undeniably a powerful phone and back when it launched in June 2014 it was one of the most powerful handsets on the planet.
But by the time the OnePlus Two launches it will be around a year old and time moves fast in the tech world, with octa-core processors now the norm among flagships. So at a minimum we hope the OnePlus 2 will keep pace with the latest and greatest phones around.
The obvious setup for that would be to have an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM, just like the HTC One M9, but if OnePlus feels like it wants to overpower the competition we won't complain. 4GB of RAM anyone?

6. The same size screen

OnePlus One
This might seem odd but we don't want the screen to get any bigger. The OnePlus One already has a 5.5-inch display and that's pushing the limits of usability as it is. In fact we wouldn't complain if the screen on the OnePlus Two was slightly smaller.
That's not to say that we wouldn't like to see improvements though. OnePlus could always up the resolution to QHD (assuming the battery life doesn't take too much of a hit) and as good as the screen on the One is things like contrast and colour reproduction can always be improved.

7. A top flight camera

OnePlus One camera
The 13MP shooter on the OnePlus One is more than adequate but even at launch it wasn't one of the best smartphone snappers around and the gulf has only widened since.
So with the OnePlus 2 we'd like to see some improvements. The OnePlus One seems a little slow to autofocus, so a fix for that would be appreciated, whether through a new system like a laser autofocus or just through software optimisation.
More megapixels and optical image stabilisation would both be nice too, but they don't always lead to better photos, which is what we want. How that will be achieved is down to OnePlus to figure out.

8. A powerful UI

OnePlus One UI
The UI on the OnePlus One was worthy of special mention, because it used CyanogenMod, which on the surface looks quite close to stock Android, but there's a whole lot of power and customisation options tucked away for more adventurous users.
Sadly OnePlus has had a bit of a falling out with Cyanogen, so a new home-grown UI dubbed OxygenOS will be replacing it on the OnePlus 2 and we hope it will be every bit as powerful and intuitive.

9. Water and dust proofing

Water and dust proofing is a feature which we've never felt is essential on phones as we stopped pond diving years ago, but it's still nice to have if it doesn't come at the expense of anything else and it would be one more bullet point in the OnePlus Two's favour.
We doubt we'll see it, mostly because it could push the cost up and a low price surely takes priority, but also because a metal build is looking likely and not many metal phones seem to be waterproof.

10. A killer feature

Iris scanner
Price and specs go a long way towards selling a smartphone, but for the OnePlus Two to really stand out and not just feel like a rehash of the OnePlus One a big feature would help.
That could take any number of forms. OnePlus could follow other manufacturer's leads and have a curved screen like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and LG G Flex 2, or it could pack in serious fitness credentials with a heart rate monitor and the tools to track your progress. Or it could add a fingerprint scanner like Apple and Samsung have been doing.
But to stand out even more it could include something we've not seen anywhere else. Perhaps a retina scanner for example.
It probably won't have any big features like that, because cost is key, but if it did and if the cost could still be kept down then the OnePlus 2 could be a true flagship killer.
OnePlus has teased the possibility of OnePlus Two smartphone via cryptic tweet which states "time for change" dated for June 1 which isn't too far away now.

10 WhatsApp Tips And Tricks That You Should Know

10 WhatsApp Tips And Tricks That You Should Know

10 WhatsApp Tips And Tricks That You Should Know

When Instagram was bought by Facebook for $1 billion, the media went nuts. But that was nothing compared to what Facebook bought Whatsapp for – a whooping $19 billion. This breaking news came in days after Viber was reported to have been bought by Japanese online retailer, Rakuten for a fraction of the price tag: $900 million. And to think that we were scratching our heads over Snapchat turning down Facebook’s $3 billion offer. That’s a lot of zeros.
ADVERTISING
WhatsApp Tips And Tricks
Whatsapp, one of the most popular mobile messaging app, faced fierce competition from the likes of WeChat (which is huge in China and the Asia pacific region) and Line (which has its own theme park) but held its ground with its many features that ensure users have a secure, dependable and practical messaging experience. With that in mind, here are a few tips, tricks and apps to get more out of Whatsapp.

1. Hide "Last Seen" Timestamp

By default, WhatsApp shows a "last seen" timestamp, telling other users the last time you were on WhatsApp. Some of you may want to disable this timestamp, for privacy reasons. You can disable this timestamp on both iOS and Android.
If you’re an iOS user, you’re in luck, since all you need to do is go into Settings > Chat Settings > Advanced and set Last Seen Timestamp to Off.
Disable Last Seen Timestamp
If you’re an Android user, you won’t have access to this setting from the app itself. Instead, you’re going to have to rely on a third party app such as Hide WhatsApp Status. The app disables your WiFi and data connection when you open WhatsApp.
Once you exit the app, your WiFi and data connections are reactivated, WhatsApp will sync, and your messages will be sent.

2. Backup And Restore WhatsApp Chats

WhatsApp makes automatic backups of your chats, but you can also make a manual backup. On iOS, it’s Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup, then tap Back Up Now.
On Android, just go into Settings > Chat settings and tap Backup conversations to create a backup. This won’t backup your media, so you’ll need to use a file manager to copy the media folders in /sdcard/WhatsApp/Media.
Backup And Restore WhatsApp Chats
There’s no way to restore chats directly from WhatsApp, so if you want to restore a backup you’re going to have to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. When you start WhatsApp after the reinstall, you should be prompted to restore your most recent backup. Just follow the procedure and your chats should all be back.

3. Lock Your WhatsApp

Everyone, at some point or another, has probably had to deal with friends or family taking a sneak peek at their WhatsApp messages. Thankfully, if you’re using WhatsApp on Android or BlackBerry, there are apps that can help secure your WhatsApp from prying eyes.
If you’re using Android, there’s WhatsApp Lock, while BlackBerry users will want to check out Lock for WhatsApp.
Lock Your WhatsApp
Basically, both of these apps work similarly: when you use them, WhatsApp will be protected by a PIN (in the case of WhatsLock) or a password (in the case of Lock for WhatsApp). Either way, once you have things set up, the people around you shouldn’t be able to take a sneak peek at your WhatsApp any longer.

4. Create Shortcuts For Important Contacts

Want to speed up your WhatsApp communication? How about creating a shortcut to your favorite Whatsapp contact or group straight from your homescreen?
On Android, this is as simple as long pressing on the group or contact you want to create a shortcut for. When the menu pops up, just tap on Add conversation shortcut. This will create a shortcut to the contact or group you have chosen right on your homescreen.
Add Conversation Shortcuts
This behaviour isn’t available on WhatsApp for iOS, but you can use a third-party app such as 1TapWA to have similar functionality on your iPhone. Since it’s an app, 1TapWA also has some extra features such as an image editor and an action scheduler.

5. Stop WhatsApp Images from Appearing In Gallery Or Camera Roll

Having WhatsApp images in your Gallery or Camera Roll can be very annoying; maybe the images are somewhat private, or you just don’t like having these images clutter up your Gallery or Camera Roll. You can fix this on both iOS and Android.
On iOS, it’s pretty simple; just go to Settings > Privacy > Photos and then turn the WhatsApp switch off.
Stop WhatsApp Images From Appearing In Camera Roll
On Android, you have to create a .nomedia file in WhatsApp’s images or video directories. To do this, you need a file explorer such as ES File Explorer. Navigate to the images or video folders. Tap the New button in the lower left, pick File and create a file named .nomedia. This will stop the Gallery from scanning the folder.

6. Change Your WhatsApp Phone Number

If you’ve changed phone numbers but kept the same phone, you don’t need to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp just to change numbers. There’s a setting within WhatsApp that will let you migrate your WhatsApp account to a different phone number.
Change WhatsApp Phone Number
Go to Settings > Account > Change number. Enter your old phone number in the top field and then your new phone number in the bottom field. Then press Done. Verify your new phone number, and all your chat history, groups and so on will be migrated to the new number.

7. Install WhatsApp On An Android Tablet

WhatsApp is built for phones and is intelligent enough to know when you’re trying to run it on a tablet, but there are ways around this. Firstly, you need to grab the latest version of the WhatsApp .apk. Visit the official site with Chrome or Firefox and request the desktop version of the site, which will allow you to download the .apk directly.
Then download SRT AppGuard. Install both.
WhatsApp On Android Tablet
Run AppGuard first. Select WhatsApp from the Dashboard then press Monitor. Once AppGuard is done setting up the monitoring, scroll down and disable read phone status and identity under Phone calls. WhatsApp should now run on your tablet. To activate WhatsApp, you can just use your landline and have WhatsApp call you with the three-digit verification code.

8. WhatsApp Chat Heads On Android

One of the best things about Facebook Messenger is its chat heads functionality. We’ve talked about bringing chat heads features to SMS before, but now you can also have chat heads for your WhatsApp conversations too, using WhatsApp Chat Heads. As the name suggests, the app works alongside WhatsApp to add chat heads for your conversations.
WhatsApp Chat Heads
The chat heads are somewhat customizable, and you can have specific LED colors, notification sounds and chat head colors for each of your contacts. One thing to be aware of, though, is that the app requires root access. Plus, it’s also still in beta, so you may encounter some small issues here and there.

9. Get Messaging Statistics On Android

This will definitely interest you if you’re a statistics geek, or simply someone who’s interested in finding out you and your friends’ WhatsApp habits. WhatStat provides information for metrics such as your top friends, friends’ and groups’ most active times of the day as well as message distribution for both one-on-one and group chats.
WhatsApp Statistics
WhatStat presents all this information in easy-to-understand visualisations that will make perfect sense to anyone. No more having to pay specific attention to who initiates conversations or what a good time to message someone is; WhatStat will do that all for you.

10. Get WhatsApp notifications On Desktop

If you’ve ever missed a WhatsApp message while working on your desktop, you’ll know how annoying it can be. If you’re using Android, there are a few ways to make sure that you never miss a WhatsApp message again. You can use Pushbullet, which includes notification mirroring alongside a lot of other features, but if all you want is notifications on your computer, check out Desktop Notifications.
WhatsApp Desktop NotificationJust install Desktop Notifications on your Android phone, then install either the Chrome or Firefox extensions depending on your choice of browser. Link the extension to the app using the code provided and you’re good to go; you’ll now get WhatsApp (and more) notifications on your desktop.

UMI EMAX REVIEW

UMI EMAX REVIEW

UMI EMAX REVIEW: BLISTERING PERFORMANCE AT AN UNRIVALLED PRICE

We've been impressed by what we've seen from Chinese phone maker UMI so far, having recently reviewed both the Zero and Hammer. This UMI eMax is an altogether more powerful beast, with an octa-core processor, a standout 5.5in full-HD screen and a massive 3780mAh battery that can even serve as a power bank for other phones. Find out more in our UMI eMax review. Updated on 9/7/15 with our video review. Also see: Best cheap 4G phones 2015.
The best bit about the UMI eMax is its price, and right now it's available for just £115 fromCoolicool.com. That's amazing value for money. Bear in mind, though, that this phone ships from China, so you may also incur import duty when purchased in the UK - read up on our advice on buying grey-market tech.
While the UMI eMax's graphics performance sits in line with UK-sold budget phones, its processing and battery performance is spectacular, beaten in our benchmarks only by the best Android phones in the land, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its brother the S6 Edge. While benchmarks can be cheated, and its AnTuTu score isn't quite so high, the eMax shows no sign of lag in real-world use, and even the Camera app launches relatively quickly.
The eMax isn't as good-looking as the metal-framed Hammer and Zero, but for a phablet it's reasonably attractive. Legends for the three Android-standard home, back and options buttons are always visible below the screen, and the camera juts out at the rear very much like on the Samsung Galaxy S6. There's also a rear-mounted speaker, although the size of the phone means it is unlikely to fire sound into your palm.
UMI eMax review: Blistering performance at an unrivalled price, this budget 4G phone is worth £115 of anyone's money
Available in grey or silver, the eMax is a plastic phone with a subtle brushed-metal-effect finish on the rear. This is not removable, with trays at the left and right edges for adding two 4G SIM cards and a microSD card. But with 16GB of storage as standard and very little bloatware preinstalled, you may find there's enough space for your files and apps without expansion. Also see: Best smartphones 2015.
In terms of photography you get the standard 13Mp rear- and 5Mp front camera setup. There's support for smile-, gesture, and voice-activated capture,  real-time application of filters, plus all the usual camera modes, including HDR, picture-in-picture, live photo, motion tracking, panorama and multi-angle capture. The front camera also has a Beauty mode.
UMI's eMax is sold rooted, but don't let that put you off. With Android 4.4 KitKat preinstalled out of the box, and an upgrade to 5.0 Lollipop available, the eMax in common with the Hammer also supports Rootjoy. This is a program that you download to your Windows PC or laptop, then plug in your phone to quickly install updates, flash a new ROM of your choice (including such things as MIUI6), install a custom UI or back up your data.
The interface is largely plain KitKat, but you do also get the customisable gestures and double-tap to unlock feature so often found on Chinese phones. With the phone in standby mode, drawing a letter onscreen will launch an app of your choice.
While the eMax lacks some advanced features, such as the fingerprint scanner found in the £147 Ulefone BeTouch, at £115 you get a great deal for your money. Let's take a closer look.

UMI EMAX REVIEW: PRICE AND UK AVAILABILITY

Our UMI eMax sample was shipped from Coolicool.com, where it costs £115.59. Coolicool is based in China, which means you may also incur import duty when shipping items to the UK. Read up on our advice on buying grey-market tech before you buy.

UMI EMAX REVIEW: DESIGN & BUILD

Unlike the Zero and Hammer before it, the UMI eMax is a relatively plain-looking, unassuming device. With a 5.5in screen this is a phablet, but it's still just 148g and with slim bezels reasonably easy to operate in a single hand.
From the front the eMax is marred only by the always-visible legends for the Home, Back and Options buttons. Switch on the screen, though, and you instantly don't care: with a full-HD resolution this IPS panel is crystal clear, and as sharp as many flagship Androids at 401ppi. You absolutely should not expect a full-HD screen at this price. Colours are bright and realistic, even with the brightness turned down, and viewing angles are very good. Also see: Best Android phones 2015.
From the rear the eMax is less attractive, but by no means ugly. We're confused by the Chinese-English translation in the eMax's marketing materials, which states: "The one piece art of frame battery cover is made by Polycarbonate with 200 times processing brushed stainless steal [sic]." This phone looks and feels very much like a plastic device to us, although there is a subtle brushed-metal effect to the rear.

The rear cover is non-removable, with side-loading trays for the two SIM slots and microSD card. A power button and volume rocker are also found on the eMax's right side, while there's a headphone jack at the top and Micro-USB charging port at the bottom. Despite its plastic feel the eMax feels very sturdy - not as tough as the Hammer, but tough nonetheless.
We're not so keen on the way the phone's 13Mp camera sticks out at the rear, but this is becoming increasingly common in today's ever-thinner phones. And this is one of them: at 7.9mm thick, you'd never guess the eMax costs just £115. As is the case on the Samsung Galaxy S6, though, this camera is centred and squareish, so it won't rock nearly so much when placed flat on the table as, for example, the iPhone 6.
Also at the base of the rear is a speaker grille. Usually this is a no-no for us, muffling sound as it fires it into your palm, but this phone's phablet dimensions stopped this being a problem in our testing. Also see all smartphone reviews.

UMI EMAX REVIEW: HARDWARE & PERFORMANCE

Inside the UMI eMax is a 1.7GHz MediaTek MTK6752 octa-core 64-bit processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and an ARM Mali-T760 MP2 graphics processor. We have seen this setup before, such as in the Kingzone Z1, while the Ulefone BeTouch adds an extra gig of RAM. But the eMax appears to have put its hardware to the best use - at least if our benchmarks are to be believed.
And therein lies the catch: benchmarks can't always be trusted. Nevertheless, we found the UMI eMax smooth and responsive in real-world use, with no sign of lag.
In Geekbench 3.0 the UMI eMax gave its standout performance. We use this test to measure processing performance, but have also recently begun including results from its battery life test. The eMax aced both - and the latter is certainly no surprise, given the capacious 3780mAh cell found inside. With OTG support (and an adaptor included in the box), the eMax can even be used as a power bank to charge another phone - it will fill an iPhone 6 twice, says UMI. So, you can expect several days' life with normal use.
The reigning champions of our Geekbench 3 tests are the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, with the S6 scoring 4438 points in processing- and 4136 in battery performance, and the S6 Edge 5076- and 4011 points. The UMI eMax got incredibly close to those scores performance, with 4101 points in processing-, and 4006 in battery performance. By comparison, in processing performance the UMI Hammer recorded 2203 points and the Kingzone Z1 3689. We also ran the Kingzone through the battery life test, and it scored 3074 points.

AnTuTu is another new test to the PC Advisor lab, and with few results with which to compare devices for now it's rather difficult to understand what the scores are telling us. However, through AnTuTu's own database we can see that the UMI eMax's 41,799-point score is faster than both the Nexus 5 and LG G3, but slightly below last year's flagship Samsung Galaxy S5. It also performed better than the UMI Hammer (32,506) and Ulefone BeTouch (41,661). Also see: Best budget phones 2015.
Graphics performance in GFXBench showed something to be desired, and rather than delivering scores to match the flagships the UMI eMax put in a performance similar to that of other budget- and mid-range phones, including the EE Harrier, Sony Xperia M2 and Moto E 4G. Casual games will be easily playable on the eMax, but scores of 15fps in T-Rex and 6fps in Manhattan are nothing to shout home about.
Our final test is SunSpider, which measures JavaScript performance. We ran this test both in the preinstalled browser, in which it recorded a very good 734ms, and in Chrome to ensure a fair test across Android phones. Its Chrome score of 840ms is still very good (lower scores are better in this test), and in line with the likes of the Honor 6, Sony Xperia Z3 and Samsung Galaxy S5.
You can compare the UMI eMax's performance to all the smartphones reviewed by PC Advisor in our article What's the fastest smartphone 2015.
UMI EMAX REVIEW: CONNECTIVITY
Connectivity-wise there's support for dual-band 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. For positioning you get both GPS and A-GPS with EPO, with the separate GPS sensor claimed to offer faster results and improved accuracy. Also see all Android phone reviews.
NFC is missing, but you do get HotKnot, which is MediaTek's equivalent. This lets you share files and web pages, play games and more with other HotKnot-connected phones.
OTG support is perhaps more useful in the UMI eMax than it is other Androids, given the large-capacity battery. You could use the eMax as an emergency charger for powering other devices… or you could be selfish and keep that juice to yourself, and tell your friends to buy themselves power banks. OTG also lets you hook up external storage devices, and an adaptor is handily supplied in the box. Also see: How to add storage to Android.
The UMI eMax is a dual-SIM phone that operates in dual-standby mode (read more aboutdual-SIM phones), accepting two Micro-SIMs. It's a 4G phone, which is very good at this price, but if you're buying the eMax in the UK check that it will work on your network first. The eMax operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz, WCDMA 900/1900/2100MHz and 4G-FDD 800/1800/2600MHz. Also see: How to tell whether a phone is supported by your network.

UMI EMAX REVIEW: CAMERAS

As with virtually every Chinese phone we see, the UMI is fitted with a 13Mp camera at the rear, with f/2.2 aperture and an LED flash, and a 5Mp selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture and 1.12um pixels.
The primary camera focuses in 0.3 seconds, and we found it did a decent enough job when we switched on HDR, although some detail is missing when you zoom in. You can see our test shots with and without HDR below.
UMI eMax review: Blistering performance at an unrivalled price, this budget 4G phone is worth £115 of anyone's money
Real-time filters are available at the composition stage for both cameras, and both also benefit from a Beauty mode and Picture-in-picture. Switch to the main camera and you get more options, including HDR, live photo, motion tracking, panorama and multi-angle capture. There's support for smile-, gesture, and voice-activated capture, too, plus a 40-shot burst mode.
Note, however, that the full 13Mp is available only in 4:3 format; in the phone's default 16:9 stills top out at 9.5Mp.
We also tested the video camera. Playback was fine on the phone, but developed a stutter when we downloaded it to our computer, so we haven't included our test footage in this review. HDR can also be switched on for video.

UMI EMAX REVIEW: SOFTWARE

Given that the UMI eMax is sold rooted and with support for Rootjoy, there's no need to stick with the Android 4.4 KitKat OS preinstalled out of the box unless you want to. An upgrade to Lollipop is available, or you can load up Rootjoy on a Windows PC or laptop, hook up your phone and then install a custom OS of your choice. Rootjoy also lets you load updates, install a custom UI and back up your data. Also see: How to back up Android.
Stick with KitKat, though, and you won't be disappointed. This is a fairly stock implementation of the Android OS, with full access to Google Play and Google apps. Very little bloatware is preinstalled, and you may find additional apps such as ToDo and File Manager useful. SuperCleaner's effect is debatable, but it aims to clear away junk files, help you manage your apps and startup items and more to boost performance.
In common with the majority of Chinese phones we review, customisable gestures are present. Not only can you double-tap to wake the screen, but you can draw a letter onscreen in standby mode to automatically launch an app of your choice. The sooner this becomes a standard feature of Android the better.

OUR VERDICT

UMI's eMax offers superb value for money. It's not as good-looking as other UMI phones we've reviewed, but the eMax has a big and bright full-HD screen for enjoying media and more, and showed very capable performance in the majority of our benchmarks. Photography is decent at this price, and enthusiasts will appreciate the Rootjoy support. At £115 you can't go far wrong with the UMI eMax.
